Summary

Greece in the age of Heroes。 Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia。 Here he is nobody, just another unwanted boy living in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles。

Achilles, “best of all the Greeks,” is everything Patroclus is not—strong, beautiful, the child of a goddess—and by all rights their paths should never cross。 Yet one day, Achilles takes the shamed prince under his wing and soon their tentative connection gives way to a steadfast friendship。 As they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something far deeper—despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals。

Fate is never far from the heels of Achilles。 When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name。 Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause。 Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows Achilles into war, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they have learned, everything they hold dear。 And that, before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate。

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart。

"Wow" was the first word that came to my mind when I finished the book。 Just wow。 This was written so beautifully, the phrasing, the descriptions, all with astonishing elegance and creativity。 And, honestly, if I can write like Madeline Miller, my life is complete。 Literally。 How people have spoken back then, their vocabulary, their language has always been intriguing to me, and that is partially why I enjoyed reading this book。 However for the most part, I loved this book because there's so muc "Wow" was the first word that came to my mind when I finished the book。 Just wow。 This was written so beautifully, the phrasing, the descriptions, all with astonishing elegance and creativity。 And, honestly, if I can write like Madeline Miller, my life is complete。 Literally。 How people have spoken back then, their vocabulary, their language has always been intriguing to me, and that is partially why I enjoyed reading this book。 However for the most part, I loved this book because there's so much depth to it。 There are so many aspects to consider of how a conflict led to a resolution, of why the character acted in a particular way, and of how human's nature of greediness and pride formed the ending。 I listed a long list of conspiracies to guess the happening of events, but sharing them here would mean spoiling the book, so I'd rather not。 I've never read Greek mythology as much as other genres, but after finishing this book, it has sparked an interest in me。 I adored The Song of Achilles and finishing this book: "I feel like I could eat the world raw" (Miller 98)。 。。。more

Beautiful and devastating。 Expect it to be written in a higher level of prose, more like poetry。

Such a devastatingly beautiful tragedy of two life-long companions。 The descriptions of the intimacy between Patroclus and Achilles is absolutely breathtaking and comes off the page so vividly with such passion that I could not help but fall in love with both of these characters。 What made this book so incredible was simply how “human” these two characters were。 Nothing about them felt cliché or shoddily devised, they were simply nuanced characters with such complex depth to each of them。 By the Such a devastatingly beautiful tragedy of two life-long companions。 The descriptions of the intimacy between Patroclus and Achilles is absolutely breathtaking and comes off the page so vividly with such passion that I could not help but fall in love with both of these characters。 What made this book so incredible was simply how “human” these two characters were。 Nothing about them felt cliché or shoddily devised, they were simply nuanced characters with such complex depth to each of them。 By the finalpages, we are reminded as readers of this incredible depth leading to a flowing of water works from every reader with a heart。 The story and the way Miller is so effortlessly able to capture sometimes complex Greek mythologies into such an easy to follow and beautifully written tale is a feat of itself, regardless of the characters。 This book and everything about it is wonderful, heartbreaking, and beautiful, cannot recommend enough。 。。。more

I was forced to read The Illiad in High School, being an epic poem and me bing 15 at the time。 We discussed the relationship between Achilles and Patroclos being more than just friendship, but we did not go in depth。 I appreciated that this book explored that and the implications of that relationship。 I highly reccomend that any person that is interested in greek mythology should read this book!

The Song of Achilles is a Greek mythology retelling from the perspective of an exiled Prince, Patroclus, who bonds with the famous Achilles, the son of King Peleus and destined to be a great warrior。 The book follows them as they come of age and eventually go off to fight in the Trojan War。My feelings about this book are slightly complicated。The first half was pretty good I would say。 If the whole book were like it then this book would likely be getting four stars。The second half however contain The Song of Achilles is a Greek mythology retelling from the perspective of an exiled Prince, Patroclus, who bonds with the famous Achilles, the son of King Peleus and destined to be a great warrior。 The book follows them as they come of age and eventually go off to fight in the Trojan War。My feelings about this book are slightly complicated。The first half was pretty good I would say。 If the whole book were like it then this book would likely be getting four stars。The second half however contained two of the Things I Do Not Enjoy Reading About In Books, which are as follows:1。 War (hence my two-star rating of Mockingjay)2。 Greek mythology (I know the whole book is a retelling of a Greek myth but I was better able to forget that I was reading a retelling of a Greek myth in the first half since there's no war) I was told that even if you don't particularly enjoy Greek mythology then you can still like The Song of Achilles but I must say, I am clueless why it has an average rating of flipping 4。41 out of 5 stars。 It's the same with the Percy Jackson series, which I've heard nothing but good things about but still did not impress me。 Another thing that irked me in the book was how years would pass in a single sentence, which I always loathe because I feel like I'm missing so much of what transpired in the characters' world during that time。 To sum up how I feel towards this book, it's just mediocre。 。。。more

Even though this book put me in a reading slump it was still very interesting and beautifully written。 It is a little bit overhyped especially towards the end。 Since people had told me that the ending was very sad but I didn’t shed a single tear reading it。 It does take a while to get used to Madeline Miller’s writing style but overall this is a great book that I think everyone should read。

Madeline Miller writes in such a beautiful way and The Song of Achilles is a perfect representation of this。 As you know, this story is partially a love story, and I despise a sappy romantic book。 Miller finds one hundred different ways to say "I love you" in this story that show the passion within the characters。 However, I, like many of you, was brought here through social media and was let down when it comes to how sad I expected it to be。 I am a sucker for sad ending and I believe I let my e Madeline Miller writes in such a beautiful way and The Song of Achilles is a perfect representation of this。 As you know, this story is partially a love story, and I despise a sappy romantic book。 Miller finds one hundred different ways to say "I love you" in this story that show the passion within the characters。 However, I, like many of you, was brought here through social media and was let down when it comes to how sad I expected it to be。 I am a sucker for sad ending and I believe I let my expectations get too high。 That does not stop me from recommending this book。In conclusion, this book is understandable, beautiful, exciting, and one of my favorites。 。。。more

THANK YOU BOOK TOK FOR THIS RECOMMENDATION!! 😂Sadly, I didn’t cry but I loved this book all the same! The pace of the book is really good, especially how it builds up to suspense of the war。 I really enjoyed the book being from Patroclus’s perspective。 It is a lovely beautiful story and telling of the war and I really came to love the characters in my short time of reading it。

Where to start?I started off reading Madeline Miller's second book: Circe which I thought was amazingly written。 The story of a forgotten goddess becoming feared by every other god was a fun story and highlighted a part of Greek mythology that I barely knew about。 I knew I wanted to read, her arguably more famous book, The Song of Achilles next。 That's what I did over the course of this week。The story of Patroclus and Achilles is far more well-known and heartbreaking than the story of Circe。 Two Where to start?I started off reading Madeline Miller's second book: Circe which I thought was amazingly written。 The story of a forgotten goddess becoming feared by every other god was a fun story and highlighted a part of Greek mythology that I barely knew about。 I knew I wanted to read, her arguably more famous book, The Song of Achilles next。 That's what I did over the course of this week。The story of Patroclus and Achilles is far more well-known and heartbreaking than the story of Circe。 Two people who feel the purest form of love for each other is the sweetest thing。 Most people know how the story of Patroclus (because it is his story) ends。 Madeline Miller uses this to great effect。 I feel like every loving word that Achilles and Patroclus exchange is laced with a certain amount of sadness, you know where the two of them will end up。 And even with that knowledge, the last 50 pages wrecked me and I was sniffling on the couch (This will be a recurring theme, I cry too easily)。 If there's one thing that Madeline Miller excels at it is her characterization。 Every character is fully realized and has so many different aspects to them。 Every aspect of them is completely believable and so very human。 I can see why she is so popular right now and has reinvigorated the "Greek Myth" genre (maybe even started the trend of these books??) I can't wait to see what she does next!I'd honestly recommend it to everyone! What can I say? It's great! Also, my little nerd corner。 I played this game called Hades where you play as the son of, you guessed it, Hades。 In this you get to reunite Patroclus and Achilles in the Underworld, reading this book made me appreciate that so much more。 Would also recommend this game, it's 10/10。 。。。more
